DEA Required Training

DEA education requirement on substance use disorders

Beginning on June 27, 2023, all providers with a DEA registration will be asked to check a box on their registration form to confirm they have received 8 hours of training in substance use disorders. The deadline for completing the training is the date of each practitioner’s next scheduled DEA renewal - or at the time of any new registrations. The training requirement is one-time only, and the 8 hours do not have to be consecutive but may be cumulative over several activities.

The following providers are considered to have already met the training requirement:

  • doctors board-certified in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry by American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association

  • providers who have previously completed DATA-2000 waiver training at any time in the past

  • all practitioners that graduated from a medical, dental, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing school within five years of June 27, 2023, provided that their curriculum included at least 8 hours of training in substance use disorders

  • providers with any previous training in substance use disorders totaling 8 hours provided by any of the approved groups listed below.

The following groups are approved training providers:
