DEA Required Training
DEA education requirement on substance use disorders
Beginning on June 27, 2023, all providers with a DEA registration will be asked to check a box on their registration form to confirm they have received 8 hours of training in substance use disorders. The deadline for completing the training is the date of each practitioner’s next scheduled DEA renewal - or at the time of any new registrations. The training requirement is one-time only, and the 8 hours do not have to be consecutive but may be cumulative over several activities.
The following providers are considered to have already met the training requirement:
doctors board-certified in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry by American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association
providers who have previously completed DATA-2000 waiver training at any time in the past
all practitioners that graduated from a medical, dental, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing school within five years of June 27, 2023, provided that their curriculum included at least 8 hours of training in substance use disorders
providers with any previous training in substance use disorders totaling 8 hours provided by any of the approved groups listed below.
The following groups are approved training providers:
The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP)/Providers Clinical Support System (FREE)
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS)
Any other organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACCME) or the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR)
